Greenburgh’s Annual 9/11 Remembrance Tribute took place at Webb Field on Friday, September 11, 2020, reflecting the current climate of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The ceremony began with opening remarks by Gerald Byrne of the Parks Department followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, and the lowering of the Flag. Fairview Fire Chief Howard Reiss explained how the 5-5-5-5 ringing of the bells signaled the line of duty death of a firefighter.

A moment of silence was held followed by the 5-5-5-5 ringing of the bell and sirens sounding.

Members of Hartsdale, Fairview and Greenville fire departments read the names of the 343 members of the New York Fire Department who lost their lives that day trying to save others. Greenburgh Police personnel read the names of members of the New York City Police Department, Port Authority PD and other members of law enforcement who were killed that day. Local residents who perished that day had their names read by members of the Town Board.

After the reading of the names sirens sounded and the bell was rung again.

The ceremony concluded with the GPD Honor Guard firing a gun salute, retired detective Kenny Lee playing taps and the raising of the Flag to full staff. Photos by Alan Zale
