Retired Deputy Chief William Raftery headed a fundraising kickoff for construction of a 9/11 Memorial to be built in Chesapeake, VA. A temporary monument was built next to the site of the proposed finished monument and contains a 21 foot, 11,000 pound beam from the World Trade Center. With the help of the Chesapeake Fire Department, the beam was ceremoniously placed atop two piles of rubble symbolic of Ground Zero.
The final monument will also contain a block of stone from the Pentagon and a rock from Shanksville, PA.
