Just after 9pm on Wednesday July 6th Fairview, Greenville and Hartsdale Fire Departments were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on the Sprain Brook Parkway in the area of Ardsley Rd. Shortly after dispatch units were advised of a possible hazardous materials release. Engine 176 requested Hartsdale Car 2172 and Engine 169 enter the parkway. Upon arrival a large vapor cloud was visible due to the chemical release. Sprain Brook Command then requested a Level I hazmat assignment that added Squad 6 (hazmat asset made up of members of Hartsdale, Greenville and Fairview) to the scene. With The squad trailer, Engine 170 and Ladder 4 added to the assignment units established hot, warm, and cold isolation zones. Members then began the decontamination of exposed civilians. Multiple EMS units were requested to the scene as well as Yonkers Fire Departments Hazmat Team. As units on scene began preparing for entry into the hot zone a decon corridor was established as well as a staging area. Members made a Level B (Chemical Protective Clothing) entry to identify the products as well as to mitigate the chemical reaction. With all chemicals being contained and neutralized in over pack drums units began decontaminating all members, tools, equipment and the vehicles themselves. Units operated till 145 am until command was terminated and the parkway reopened.

Hartsdale units also handled several medical emergencies in the ensuing traffic jam that lasted over four hours.

Thank You to Scarsdale FD who stood by in Hartsdale with Engine 171 and Tower Ladder 15 during this incident.
